How Blue Became A Part Of The Family

There is a home in my neighborhood that breeds huskies. Every once in awhile, usually in the Spring, there’s new puppies running around that ungated yard. This particular Spring there were two all white puppies running around that yard and free through the neighborhood. Whenever they came down to my yard we would pet and play with them a bit, then they would run off back home. Moving into the Fall, one week, every day I came home, the one puppy kept being on my porch. I eventually put an old cat bed out there for him. He didn’t want to play anymore. He was really dirty and barely wanted to eat. I kept thinking even if he’s sick, he’ll eventually wander back up the street.

He never did. By about the 3rd day, he had resigned himself to just laying behind the porch couch. I started wondering was he so sick that he came down here to die on my porch? I also wondered why the people from “The Husky Mill” never came for him. The kids begged me to at least give him a bath, The following videos are what transpired next.

How Smokey Became A Part of the Family.

Getting off work one day, I stopped by the gas station nearest my house. I don’t even remember what I went to buy. While I was in the store, I kept hearing a kitten crying. I asked the woman who tended the store if they had gotten a cat. She told me they hadn’t, but a kitten had started coming around and she started feeding it. The baby kept crying and she finally decided she was going to go to the back door and feed the kitten. I left her to it, but then she had a hard time getting the door open, so I went to help her get the old heavy door open. Once we got it open, I saw this tiny black thing try to immediately run in.

The attendant placed the baby back outside and sat down the can of tuna she had grabbed off the shelf for him. I bent down to pet the little baby while he ate and noticed his eyes were pretty much crusted shut. I remember wondering how is he surviving out here alone so tiny and barely able to see. I couldn’t leave him there like that. I asked the woman had she seen any of its siblings. She said no, that he was always alone. I asked for a box to place him in and told her I was taking him home. I got him home and took him to the vet the next day. I got antibiotics to give him and eye ointment. She told me he was 8 – 12 weeks old and had most likely been born around July 4th. The first video I took of him, his eyes were still pretty crusty.

How George Became A Part of the Family.

George belonged to a neighbor who lives about 4 houses up from us. We would see him around the neighborhood often. Seemed like a sweet kitty. One day, George was lying on my porch with a hurt foot. I’m not sure what was wrong with it, but it looked really swollen. We started feeding George and loving on him. I figured he just wanted to stay on the porch until his foot got better. Figured he probably felt vulnerable especially with the neighborhood bully cat, Nickels, always lurking and always looking for a fight. I’d seen him and George have scrape ups before. Probably how his foot got messed up in the first place.

At any rate, George never really left again. He’ll leave the porch once in awhile to go lord knows where to do lord knows what, but he’s never far from the porch and he doesn’t stay gone long. He started running to the car every time I pulled in from work. He would watch after the grandbabies protectively whenever they were outside playing. The kids went as far as to go buy him a collar. I still have not allowed George to move in, but he’s made it pretty clear that he now considers this home and that he’s not going anywhere. We’re at a point now where I’ll let him follow me into the house to get the bag of cat food for me to bring to the porch and fill, what is now, his bowl. Every once in awhile I’ll even let him come in and hang out for a bit. Even though he’s clearly claimed me as his and the kids call him my cat, I haven’t full on made the leap yet to fully taking him in. I already have Smokey and Blue. And Let’s not forget Hunzo. But again, you’ll see in the following video how George feels about the whole situation. He’s pretty adamant.
